One dead after Maersk vessel catches fire


ONE crewmember has died and four are still missing following a blaze on the containership Maersk Honam on Tuesday.

The man who died was a Thai national, Maersk said when announcing the fatality. Of the 27 crew, 22 are now enroute to Sri Lanka,

The 15,262 teu ship was loaded with 7,860 containers, equivalent to 12,416 teu.

Maersk said the cause of the fire, which broke out in a cargo hold, remains unknown.

The Danish group’s flagship 18,000 teu-class Maersk Mc-Kinney Moller is coordinating search and rescue operations, with five ships involved in total.

Maersk said the fire is still burning and the situation remains critical. The ship is positioned around 900 nautical miles southeast of Salalah
